After a redesign for 2010, the 2011 mustang gets two new engines, as well as new transmissions and improvements to ride, handling, and noise. So the 2011 mustang represents a significant improvement over the superb 2010 edition of america's pony car, which was a large improvement over the 2004-2009 models, which was a major improvement over what came before that.  the mustang has been in continuous production for 46 straight years, and more than 9 million mustangs have been built and sold to date. That gives the mustang the longest production run of any single model in ford history.  the 2011 ford mustang comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and a glass-roof coupe. Each is available in both the traditional v6 model and the v8-powered mustang gt. Both engines are much more powerful this year.  the 3. 7-liter v6 replaces the old 4. 0-liter v6, the new one producing 305 horsepower versus just 210 horses from the older, bigger engine. The new v8 marks the return of the 5. 0. An new all-aluminum engine, the 5. 0-liter v8 in the mustang gt produces 412 horsepower, which is far more than the 315 horsepower of the outgoing 4. 6-liter v8. Both new engines for 2011 get new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions versus the five-speeds of 2010.  the ford shelby gt500 gains power for 2011, with a new aluminum version of the 5. 4-liter v8 producing 550 horsepower instead of the 500 ponies from the 2010 iron-block engine. We have not driven the new shelby gt500. Yet.  the 2011 engines transform the mustang, providing the type of willing power pony car fans will love while improving fuel economy at the same time. The engines are lighter and the car has more rigidity, so the already impressive handling is that much better.  the 2011 mustang is also quieter and more refined than ever, and, more importantly, it's an absolute blast to drive. It is quick off the mark with a brawny sound, crisp handling, a tight suspension, and much improved brakes. Put simply, this is the best mustang ever, and it is the model that other pony car makers should follow.  in addition to the new engines and transmissions, the 2011 mustang gets an additional front z brace and a revised suspension to improve ride quality while also improving handling; new safety features including ford's mykey system, power side mirrors with integral blind spot mirrors, and fold-down rear headrests; electric power steering meant to improve fuel economy while also aiding steering feel; and new features, such as a performance package for v6 models and available brembo brakes for the gt. lineupthe 2011 mustang is offered in v6 base and premium models, v8-powered gt base and premium models, and the supercharged v8-powered gt500, each in coupe and convertible body styles. There's a sport appearance package 295) that just has the rear spoiler and body stripes.  the mustang club of america special edition 995) for the v6 premium adds p235/50zr18 tires on sterling gray metallic-painted alloy wheels, dark stainless painted billet grille with tri-bar pony badge, side tape stripes, decklid tape, rear spoiler, carpeted floormats with pony logo, and automatic headlights.  the california special 1,995) edition for the gt premium adds 19-inch painted alloy wheels, a chrome billet grille with tri-bar pony badge, unique lower front fascia with foglamps, pedestal spoiler, decklid badge with faux gas cap, instrument panel applique, carbon door panel inserts, carbon inserts for leather seating surfaces, carpeted floormats with logo, rear diffuser-style fascia, decklid tape and side scoops.  a navigation system with voice recognition and real-time traffic information, and dual-zone automatic climate control come with the electronics group 2,340). The comfort group 595) adds heated front seats and a six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. With its 2010 redesign, ford gave a nod to the 1969-70 mustang with a new face that features a wider grille opening.  other elements of the redesign could be seen as tributes to the past. The coupe's fastback roofline, unchanged from the last generation, recalls the original 1964. 5 mustang. The chamfered three-element taillamps, which house sequential turn signals that blink from the inside lamp to the outside lamp, were first found on the 1964 thunderbird, then the 1967-68 shelby mustangs and late '60s mercury cougars. And the hockey stick lower character line could be viewed as an homage to the lower portion of the side coves found on mustangs from 1964 to '68.  compared to the last generation body style, ford said the 2010 mustang had 23 percent less aerodynamic lift at the front with a new slotted panel installed under the radiator to direct air, 50 percent better in front/rear lift balance, and seven percent less aerodynamic drag. For 2011, the company has lowered the front air dam and added a front splitter and an underbody aero shield to improve aerodynamics by another 4 percent.  ford took several steps to improve noise, vibration and harshness for the 2010 model year, and the company has done even more for 2011. Additional sound-deadening material on the instrument panel and a rear wheel arch liner help drivers hear the sounds they want (namely the engine) and avoid the sounds that can be a distraction (such as dash creaks and tire noise).  the 3453-pound mustang (3605 pounds for the gt) uses welded steel unibody construction with front and rear subframes to mount the steering and suspension systems, with almost half the body weight in high-strength low-alloy steel. It is by far the lightest of the new breed of pony cars, beating the camaro by 300 pounds and the dodge challenger by as much as 500 pounds. The weight savings are a definite advantage.  the convertible comes standard with a power top with a glass rear window. The top uses two latches that the driver must operate, but they're within arm's reach and they latch and unlatch easily. interioranyone who hasn't been in a mustang for a couple of years will want to take a look at the 2011 model. The interior was much improved for 2010 and there are even more improvements for 2011. The front bucket seats are significantly more comfortable and better looking than the slabs used in the 2009 models, though they could still use more lateral support. The aforementioned noise.

The mustang started the ponycar genre, and now, after 40 years of competition with the camaro, firebird and others, it's the only one left.  the new mustang represents a clean-sheet design, riding on an all-new platform. It's faster, more agile and better looking than ever. The mustang gt boasts a new multi-valve, overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower and is available with a tremec five-speed manual or an automatic. lineupthe new mustang is being offered in coupe and convertible versions, though the convertibles won't be available until spring 2005. The premium package 585) adds 16-inch bright machined aluminum wheels with chrome spinners, a new shaker 500-watt audio system with 6-disc cd changer and mp3 capability, and a 6-way power adjustable driver seat.  mustang gt 24,370) features a new 300-horsepower 4. 6-liter sohc v8. Options on all mustang gts include the five-speed automatic transmission 995), side-impact air bags 370), 17-inch machined aluminum wheels 195), active anti-theft system 255), a shaker 1000-watt audio system 1,295), an interior upgrade package 450), and an interior color enhancement package 175). walkaroundnothing says modern american sporty car better than this new mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The new mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element taillamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model.  the new mustang is based on a modified version of the platform that underpins the lincoln ls, the jaguar s-type, and the ford thunderbird, but with a new three-link live-axle rear suspension installed in place of the irs under the luxury cars in order to keep the price down (the original idea was to offer the irs as standard equipment, but it will likely be on the cobra version when it comes). Ford reasons that more mustang fans will favor the solid-axle rear suspension for their recreational track days and drag racing.  everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering and harder cornering, two new engines, two new transmissions, and a large-diameter (2. 5 inches from end to end) performance exhaust system. There's nothing left of the old mustang but the logos. Optional anti-lock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations.  both new engines are mounted to their bodies with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing, and the combination of the engine and transmission bolted together, is stiffer than previous designs, which should also add to quietness. The car absolutely bristles with other new technologies.  the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota by putting the new car on the platform that ford used to call the cdw. By adapting lots of ideas and components from luxury cars like the jaguar s-type, lincoln ls, and thunderbird that were previously built on the cdw model, they have given the mustang a whole new level of sophistication that no mustang before it ever had. There's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang interior design, with two distinct right and left pods. Because of the longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation mustang.  in addition to the slick new interior decor, the new mustang has the industry's first color-changeable instrument panel display, with 125 color schemes to choose from. And, speaking of brightening, there is more shiny metal on the interior, including the vent rings, steering wheel spokes and other bits, and on sunny days, that can cause some vision and glare problems for the driver.  we found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners, and in general, the interior looks like it belongs in a much more expensive car. There is an interior upgrade package that adds red leather seats, red door inserts and red floor mats on cars with appropriate exterior colors. Another package adds real aluminum trim to the interior for one more customization step.  the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good, but in this day and age of pervasive music, there has to be more, more wattage, more speakers, more power. The ride has smoothed out, and the remaining harshness is of a completely different order. The new rear suspension uses coil springs and a lightweight three-link design with a panhard bar and other locators to keep things constant.  the new 4. 0-liter v-6 engine has more technical sophistication than any previous ford v-6. It is a very solid performer in urban, exurban and suburban duties, and the ratios in the automatic seem well matched to the available torque. When the automatic transmission gets into overdrive fifth gear, the engine goes quietly into economy mode until called upon for a lane change, a pass, or an uphill charge. But it's still a large-displacement v-6 and it sounds more muscular at full throttle than any previous ford v-6 engine.  the v-6 deluxe is the most popular model; ford says that for every three gts sold, it will sell seven of the v-6 versions. At this low price, we were particularly impressed with its power, torque, acceleration, and general road manners, including its pretty, rorty exhaust note. The new three-valve v-8 engine features both variable camshaft timing and electronic throttle control, with a new set of smarter, faster-acting engine electronic controls. It will run 0-60 mph in about 5. 5 seconds, it will outbrake a large number of sporty cars with its big new brakes, and it handles better on canyon roads that any previous mustang except the cobra, with a minimum of body roll and a large portion of tire grip.  it looks mean, and it drives mean, with 320 pound-feet of torque, a slick shifter, a brawny, loud exhaust note, and one of the world's largest aftermarket networks

The handling is crisp, the suspension feels tight, and the brakes work better in this latest generation.  the mustang has been in continuous production for 45 straight years, and more than 9 million mustangs have been built and sold to date. That gives the mustang the longest production run of any single model in ford history.  the 2010 ford mustang comes in three body styles: coupe, convertible, and a glass-roof coupe. Each is available in both the traditional v-6 model and the v8-powered mustang gt. Interior ambient lighting in the door pockets, cupholders and footwells is a new interior feature, and the lighting colors can be changed through a range of 125 colors with the flip of a switch with the new mycolor system.  new interior and entertainment features for mustang include a rear-facing video camera, the sync voice-activated hands-free system for the first time in a mustang, featuring sirius satellite radio and satellite navigation with sirius travel link. The new leather-clad steering wheel is a massive affair with six brushed metal spokes in three groups of two, with cruise controls switches and controls for the sound system, a wheel that gives a very big feeling of command. The leather interiors are of a higher grade than ever, the console can now be locked to hide valuables. The instrument panel is made in a single piece.  we found the new mustang is much quieter than the old car, with improvements in wind noise, road noise, mirror noise and powertrain noise. The radio antenna is moved to the rear to eliminate noise, the wiper design is changed to flatter blades that don't make as much noise, the washer nozzles are inside the hood, and the mirrors are reshaped. The redline has been raised 250 rpm to 6500 rpm for 2010. The engine has two built-in calibrations for regular or premium fuel (the use of premium fuel adds up to 10 foot-pounds of torque between 1000 and 3000 rpm, they tell us).  the new engine gets its cold intake air from a system built into the grille, not under the hood, the lowest-restriction air intake system ever on the mustang, with an air induction sound pipe that goes right into the cockpit to make it more pleasing to the driver at full throttle. Ford says the fresh air system alone is worth three tenths of a second in 0-60 mph acceleration improvement because the engine makes much more power with cold air. On the exhaust side, the v-8 version gets 3. 5-inch exhaust pipes versus 3. 0-inch pipes on the last mustang, and the v-6 version gets 3. 0-inch exhaust pipes instead of 2. 5-inch pipes. The standard axle ratio is 3. 31:1, with two optional ratios, 3. 55:1 or 3. 73:1, which automatically comes with larger brakes.  the gt chassis has been upgraded and stiffened using parts and pieces from the 2009 bullitt mustang, which means it rides tauter, turns in quicker and has less pitch, dive and body roll than any previous mustang, as much as 20 percent less body roll. The gt rides on 235/50r18 tires, with 245/45r19 tires optional. If the 19-inch tire and wheel option is selected, the car will automatically be built with a strut tower brace under the hood to connect the two front struts for more strength and better, more accurate handling.  the new tires, whether 17-, 18-, or 19-inch, have been chosen for their much higher levels of both wet and dry grip, and ford says the 19-inch tires can produce skidpad performance exceeding 0. 9g, which is very, very good for such a low-priced car.  abs brakes, traction control and advancetrac yaw control are standard on all models. For track work, both the traction control and the yaw control can be turned off (but not the abs), and there is a sport mode which allows higher handling limits before traction and yaw controls are called in to save the day.  with all of that as prelude, the gt v-8 is an absolute blast to drive. With more refinements for 2013, it keeps getting better. introductionthe 2013 ford mustang features a facelift and comes out bigger, bolder, cleaner. It's a change, not just a tweak. The 2013 mustang resembles a steve mcqueen bullitt mustang, its mouth shaped more like '70 mustang than a '65.  the mustang was redesigned for 2005 and got rave reviews for its looks, totally capturing the old mustang but still looking contemporary. The styling tweaks since then have made it even better, and that holds true for the 2013 mustang.  a black eggcrate grille opens wide over the bumper, with a clean and full chin, fascia, and air intakes, and just a tidy flat-black horizontal spoiler at the lip. The triangular rear window masterfully evokes the roofline of original '65 mustang, replacing its fake louvers with glass.  we're less enthusiastic about the interior of the 2013 mustang. Reviews all end up saying that the materials are okay considering the price of the car, remember it's only a mustang, and we can't argue. The steering wheel lacks imagination, and that's disappointing.  however the cloth seats are great; cloth can easily be a deal-breaker, and in the mustang it's not. In fact, the cloth seats fit better than the leather, maybe because they grip better. The optional recaro seats in either cloth or leather are excellent. There's good head and leg room up front, and visibility through the windshield is good, especially for a low-slung coupe. There's considerably more room and better visibility in the mustang than in the chevrolet camaro.  naturally, the two-passenger rear seat is no place for adults. Rear-seat headroom is limited by the rake of the coupe roof, and leg room is minimal, even with the front seats moved forward. That comes with the territory of such a car and its shape and is a small price to be paid for such proportions.  the retro instrument panel in the v6 and gt models clings too hard to the theme, we think. Having retro instrumentation on a car with modern performance like the mustang is like having a telephone with a cord. The optional shaker audio system is acoustically superb. Ford's sync system works well to choose music, but we had trouble operating it with voice commands.  the mustang convertible has a power fabric top and glass rear window. Trunk space in the convertible is reduced to 9. 6 cubic feet, from 13. 4 cubic feet in the coupe. It's a fairly high-revving engine, reaching its horsepower peak at 6500 rpm and its torque peak at 4250 rpm, so it's good to play with. And the manual comes with hill start assist, so no worries about coasting backward when starting off on a steep hill. The automatic, meanwhile, does have a manual-shift feature it's awkward to use.  the mustang v6 is epa-rated at 19/31 miles per gallon city/highway. However, we didn't get anywhere near that, running it hard on twisty two-lanes.  mustang gt has a smooth, rumbling and growling 5. 0-liter v8 engine. That's quicker than the chevrolet camaro ss, even with its huge 6. 2-liter engine and 426 horsepower. But the mustang is 230 pounds lighter, and that makes a big difference in acceleration, also handling.  the boss 302 makes 444 horsepower with the same engine. However the boss has non-retro instrumentation, that's way cleaner. And it's a boss 302.  brakes are good. Ford engineers have revised the braking system of the flex, taurus, and mustang, and the feel is powerful without being overly sensitive. The names of the modes are apt. Comfort mode kept the ride comfortable when driving over rough pavement, sport mode improved responsiveness on winding roads. We found the electronic stability control effective without being intrusive.  the 650-horsepower shelby gt 500 joins the 2013 mustang lineup. Also standard are a 2. 73 rear axle ratio, 17-inch aluminum wheels, electronic power steering, stainless steel dual exhaust, hid headlamps, led taillamps, capless fuel filler, manual air conditioning, tilt steering wheel with controls, cloth seats, and 50/50 rear folding seats (not convertible).  the v6 performance package includes a strut-tower brace, larger front sway bar and svt rear sway bar, stiffer front springs, upgraded brake calipers with performance pad, 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, 255/40r19 summer-only tires, higher stability control calibration, black side mirrors, 3. 31 rear axle, and unique engine cover (manual transmission only). There's also an equipment package 295) and tech package 1295). For the premium models, there's a comfort package and electronics package.  mustang gt models use a 5. 0-liter v8 making 420 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque, with the same transmission selection, 3. 73 rear axle, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Extra oil coolers, aerodynamics, and 20-inch wheels.  safety equipment on all mustangs includes front and front side airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitor, and ford's mykey system, which allows car owners (parents) to limit the speed and sound system volume, when they hand the keys over to others (teenagers). walkaroundthe looks of the mustang keep evolving nicely. The combination of open-mouthed grille and bulging hood gives the 2013 mustang muscular distinction. The gt boasts real black vents, in the bulging hood over its beefy 5. 0-liter v8. The chrome mustang galloping horse logo against the black eggcrate grille, on the base v6 model, also looks hot, and traditional. The foglamps go inside the grille like bookends on the silver horse, also just like 1965.  the sideview mirrors do something cool: when the unlock button on the remote is pressed, an image of a galloping horse in white led light appears on the ground like a spotlight on a stage.  the small triangular rear window is a stroke of design brilliance, and makes the roofline sleek. It's wonderfully and totally true to the 1965 mustang fastback, which used vertical fake louvers in that triangular roofline sweep.  the twin wide stripes on the 2013 shelby gt that's coming in summer of 2012 are classic.
